DON’T DRINK THE KOOL-AID | PBS AIRS DOCUMENTARY ON JONESTOWN MASSACRE APRIL 9TH

By Led Black

Jonestown On November 18th, 1978 the largest mass-murder suicide took place in Jonestown, Guyana.  The man at the center of the tragedy was Jim Jones, the elusive and deranged head of the cult known as the Peoples Temple.  Over 900 people met their death that day either by drinking the cyanide laced Kool-Aid or by gunshots and strangulations for those that refused to commit suicide.  In Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple, critically acclaimed filmmakers Stanley Nelson, Marcia Smith, and Noland Walker take viewers on an in-depth journey into that sad and sordid affair and interview some of the few remaining survivors of the ghastly event.

COLOR OF THE CROSS | FILM DEPICTING JESUS AS BLACK MAN OPENS TODAY

Color_of_the_cross By Led Black

As a child I remember my grandmother having this really scary holographic picture of Jesus, it would scare the living daylights out of me.  Images of Christ as a White man were quite common growing up.  I didn’t begin to question the accuracy of Jesus as a European until I reached high school and immersed myself in history.  Even though the historical record as well as the Bible confirms that Jesus was a person of color, the notion of Jesus as a White person still persists.  That was one of my main gripes with The Passion of the Christ besides all the unnecessary, gratuitous violence.  Finally, a movie has been made to correct this long held fallacy.  The Color of the Cross tackles the thorny issue of the color of Christ.  The premise of the film is the last 48 hours of the life of Christ before his capture at Mount Gethsemane.  This controversial film debuts on October 27th in select markets across the country.
