THE GREAT DICTATOR'S HUMANITY SPEECH

In an attempt to remind folks about who we are as a species and where we are in terms of our existence and evolution we'd like to present the following mash-up of Charlie Chaplin's speech from The Great Dictator. Pay close attention, for these Hollywood words resonate much deeper than the silver screen illusion. (Available in different language translations here)

BOBBY HUNDREDS' WORDS OF WISDOM

Bobby

Fashion guru Bobby Hundreds of The Hundreds had some choice things to say about "success" in a recent Tumblr post. The words were in response to a fan question about how he was able to "make his brand so popular". We couldn't help but to spread the wealth of knowledge. Superficial or not, some fashionistas are thinkers, especially successful ones!

With $600.  Working hard. Ignoring the hate. Listening to our brand. Doing it myself. Doing it for myself. Wanting so badly to prove my parents and teachers wrong. Treating people decently. Traveling. Growing up in hardcore. Staying informed. Losing sight of failure. Skateboarding. Recognizing real. Paying respects. Supporting great work by other people.  Asking questions. More importantly, listening to the answers. Reading books. Responding and reacting. Taking responsibility. Pursuing integrity. Upsetting the setup. Speaking up for the voiceless. Staying silent otherwise. Educating. Communicating. Forgiving, but never forgetting. Being a Lost Boy. Capitalizing on the Internet.  Listening to the Pixies. Recognizing the younger generation. Living with passion. Nurturing healthy relationships with family, friends, and lovers. Equal parts brand and business. Learning about who came before, what they contributed, how, and why. Severing distractions. Distancing myself from negativity. Surrounding myself with people who are smarter, richer, and above all, happier. Thinking outside the box (the computer). Taking myself ridiculously. Being grateful for everything, good and bad.  God. Fighting back. Not doing it for the money. Doing it for the relationships.  Doing it for the creativity. Doing it because it’s cool.  Doing it for the love.

MOOK LIFE

Mooklife

A recent trip to Montreal, Canada put us in direct contact with an alternative way of life referred to by members as Mook Life. What exactly is a "Mook" you ask? Well, a pest/hooligan/deviant to some, or just someone who decides to see civilization from a different perspective, one that doesn't necessarily glorify the 9-to-5, house, car and picket fence. Heck, we'll let them describe it in their own words:

Mook-Life.com is an online lifestyle blog dedicated to documenting life through the eyes of a mook. We are the voice of the streets and the heart of the youth, where ignorance and acting on impulse are not character defaults but celebrated skills. We see life on another angle and beauty in things that your common man’s eye is trained to overlook. It is these differences in lifestyle we wish to project to the world, because sometimes talent is sprung from the most unexpected places and bred in the harshest living conditions. The mook may be an idiot to some, a pest to others, but in our book… he is the last real human alive.

The following is a Mook Life Lookbook (Homeless Edition) dedicated to promoting the Mook lifestyle by giving props to actual (and often overlooked) street-dwellers.

INTROVERTS IN AN EXTROVERT WORLD

Introvert

Columnist Jon Ronson of The Guardian writes about his recent encounter with author Susan Cain's Quiet: The Power of Introverts--a book about the importance of introverts and how our society should embrace the quality. He goes on to point out several examples, both from the book and in his own personal life, about how structuring things for introverts can help us empower people that are naturally more thoughtful, respectful and empathetic as opposed to the more generally-rewarded extrovert qualities like competitiveness and aggression. No offense to the extroverts (we've learned much from them), but it sounds like they can a learn a thing or two from the stillness of an introvert. Read the entire article here.

The loudest, most socially confident and quickest on their feet win the day, whereas the contemplative and quietly well-informed tend not to get a word in. School classrooms are increasingly designed to reflect this flawed environment.
