THE MCCORMICK FOUNDATION IS OFFERING $10K GRANTS FOR ONLINE STARTUPS

Newnmwelogo Are you a woman who has an original idea to create a new Web site, mobile news service or other entrepreneurial initiative that offers interactive opportunities to engage, inspire and inform a particular community?

If so, the The McCormick New Media Women Entrepreneurs program may have a cool $10,000 for you. They're offering three such grants to fund women-led projects that will "rock the world of journalism."

Your venture can be a solo idea or team project, as long as it's a startup, spearheaded by women, launching within 10 months, U.S.-based, and has journalistic value. Individuals, businesses, and non-profits are all eligible to apply.

Past winning projects include:

Echo, a system of public storytelling installations in Atlanta.
Latina Voices, a news site for and by Latinas. 
Northwest Navy News, a networking site for the Puget Sound military community.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HISPANIC JOURNALISTS ANNOUNCES A CALL FOR SESSIONS

Nahj_2 The NAHJ has announced a Call For Sessions for their 27th annual Convention and Media & Career Expo, scheduled for June 24-27, 2009 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

INK_BLAST | JOIN US IN WELCOMING COLUMNIST JULEYKA LANTIGUA TO THE REPUBLICA UPDATE FAMILY

Juleyka Juleyka Lantigua, former managing editor of GIANT, XXL, Urban Latino and Honey magazines, is thrilled to be part of the República Update. She earned a Master of Science in Journalism from Boston University and a B.A. from Skidmore College in1996. While researching immigration policy as a Fulbright Scholar in Spain, she helped launch a monthly newspaper (Prensa del Caribe) and a quarterly magazine (En Dialógo). She has been a nationally syndicated columnist with The Progressive magazine's Media Project for nine years. Her writing has appeared in U.S. papers including The Houston Chronicle, The Miami Herald, and The L.A. Times as well as in newspapers and magazines in Spain, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. In February 2001, the New York Daily News selected her as one of the "Ten Latinos Changing the Face of New York." A graduate of the Radcliffe Publishing Course (now the Columbia Publishing Course), she guest edited, and contributed an essay to, the summer 2001-and an abridged Spanish-edition of the Nieman Reports for Harvard University's Nieman Foundation for Journalism. One of her essays, "Man of the House," is included in Colonize This! Young Women of Color on Today's Feminism, an anthology published in August 2002 by Seal Press. "My Ciguapa," a short story, is included in the young adult anthology Once Upon a Cuento (Seal Press, 2003). "That Latino Show," an essay published in The Progressive magazine has been anthologized in The Simon and Schuster Short Prose Reader, 4th and 5th Editions (Simon & Schuster, 2005, 2008). Lantigua has served on the faculty of the Frederick Douglass Creative Arts Center, where she taught freelance writing for magazines and newspapers.

Lantigua's "Ink Blast" column for the República Update will touch on current news, pop culture trends, political commentary, and things that generally make her go, "Huh?"
