Yale law school graduate and mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Cory Booker, is no stranger to adversity and challenge. Not only did he decided to take on one of the most notoriously poor and crime-ridden cities in his state, but he's also managed to forge a successful political career (and series) based on a rolling-up-your-sleeves-and-get-involved work ethic. The following is a commencement speech that Mayor Booker recently delivered at Bard College. It is probably one of the most relevant and powerful speeches we've heard in a long time! He breaks down what he dubs as The Conspiracy Of Love, a theory about how many unnamed and faceless heroes and forces have "conspired" to selflessly help us, about how our power to transform our exterior reality begins with radically transforming our internal reality. Much has been said about Grammy Award-winnning musician, Lauryn Hill, a large sum of it focusing on her controversial exit from the public eye after the critically-acclaimed Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. Today she's under scrutiny yet again, this time it concerns supposed federal tax evasion charges. Thankfully the artist/freedom fighter isn't keeping quiet about the situation and has turned to her Tumblr page to release a public statement addressing what she dubs an intentional smear campaign and agenda to systematically destroy her and her art:

For the past several years, I have remained what others would consider underground.  I did this in order to build a community of people, like-minded in their desire for freedom and the right to pursue their goals and lives without being manipulated and controlled by a media protected military industrial complex with a completely different agenda.  Having put the lives and needs of other people before my own for multiple years, and having made hundreds of millions of dollars for certain institutions, under complex and sometimes severe circumstances, I began to require growth and more equitable treatment, but was met with resistance.  I entered into my craft full of optimism (which I still possess), but immediately saw the suppressive force with which the system attempts to maintain it’s control over a given paradigm.  I’ve seen people promote addiction, use sabotage, black listing, media bullying and any other coercion technique they could, to prevent artists from knowing their true value, or exercising their full power.  These devices of control, no matter how well intentioned (or not), can have a devastating outcome on the lives of people, especially creative types who must grow and exist within a certain environment and according to a certain pace, in order to live and create optimally.

In case you weren't aware, this past Tuesday hosted a rare celestial occurence that happens only every one hundred years or so. The Transit Of Venus--when the planet visibly crosses the face of the sun--took place on June 5th 2012. Those of us not fortunate enough to witness it for ourselves won't have to fret as NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory telescope caught all of the action for us in gawdy detail. Somebody hand us a napkin for all this space drool we're dripping. Amazing!
