THE FIRST FEMALE NYC CAB DRIVER

THE FIRST FEMALE NYC CAB DRIVER

Gertrude Hadley Jeannette's first day on the job was a bit more memorable than the average. She was New York City's first female driver, you see. The city's first black female driver, to be exact! At 96 years of age, the resilient cabbie-turned-actress still recalls the episodes of racism and interesting people that she would always encounter on the job. She insists that it made a writer out of her. Today, she is still being recognized and honored for her work by organizations like the Coalition of Theatres of Color. Read more about Gertrude's inspiring story here.
