IMPORTANT ELECTION DAY INFO | DO’S AND DON’TS WHEN YOU GO TO THE POLLS
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A VALID STATE OR U.S. ISSUED PHOTO ID – Or you may not be allowed to vote. Many Democrats, specifically African-Americans were disenfranchised by shady schemes and turned away at the polls in 2000 (Florida) & 2004 (Ohio) for small infractions. Not having proper ID with you is an old trick that’s been used since the Civil Rights movement of the ’60’s. BE PREPARED THIS TIME. This is way too important an election and the stakes are high. EVERY SINGLE vote will count. We can not have another situation like Bush/Gore in 2000.
DO NOT WEAR OBAMA OR MCCAIN GEAR TO THE POLLS – It is illegal to campaign within 200 yards of a polling site. And if anyone is wearing an Obama or McCain Hat, T-Shirt, Button, or anything similar, that is considered "campaigning.” LEAVE THE PROMO GEAR AT HOME or you might be turned away and sent home without voting.
TRIPLE CHECK YOUR VOTE – When you go to the polls, select Obama’s or McCain’s name on the ballot FIRST before checking any other. DO NOT just vote a straight Democratic or Republican ticket and think that’s all you had to do. MAKE SURE you pull the lever, punch or check the vote next to your candidate’s name. And before leaving the voting booth, check your vote THREE TIMES to make SURE it is correct and nothing was left out. Better to be sure than sorry.
DO NOT BE APATHETIC – It is our worst enemy. DO NOT assume the election is already a won and done deal. Candidates don’t win unless WE ALL VOTE FOR them. Don’t leave it up to others.
VOTE EARLY – The lines will certainly be EXCEPTIONALLY LONG this time. Plan your day with enough time allotted to stand in line and cast your ballot. Make it a priority as if they’re handing out million dollar bills. As long as you’re in line prior to the posted closing time, you MUST be allowed to vote (even if it takes all night).
KNOW WHERE YOUR POLLING PLACE IS – During the last 2 elections the shady individuals used dirty tactics and stood outside the actual polls and sent voters to wrong locations to confuse them and block them from voting, or they tried cutting off the lines early. DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU! KNOW IN ADVANCE where you vote and get there in PLENTY of time before closing so you won’t have any worries.
TAKE ALL YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO THE POLLS WITH YOU – Make it a group "outing" like going to dinner. Or drive an elderly neighbor if necessary. Then go home to watch the returns and see your vote in action!
GET YOUR TEENAGERS & YOUNG ADULTS UP AND TO THE POLLS – Don’t let them miss out on this historic opportunity. Take them with you. If they’re away at school call them beforehand and MAKE SURE they’re prepared and planning to vote. On election day call them AGAIN and MAKE SURE they voted.
DO NOT underestimate the historical significance of this election.
