September 11th 2007 is shaping up to be a very big day for the ailing music industry due to both Kanye West and 50 Cent dropping albums that day. 50 Cent, always on the lookout for some controversy to stir up sales, has been all over the airwaves talking about how he is going to convincingly out sell Kanye and that the only way Kanye can come close is if Def Jam buys some of the albums themselves. Me, I’m not so sure. Granted 50 Cent’s last 2 albums, Get Rich or Die Trying and The Massacre, sold 12 and 11 million albums worldwide respectively but the 50 Cent brand is no longer what it once was. On the other hand, Kanye West has garnered a level of critical acceptance that 50 Cent can never claim. In fact, Kanye album, Graduation, is beating 50 Cent’s Curtis at pre-sales on iTunes. While I like both of 50 cent’s latest singles, I Get Money and the ridiculously infectious Ayo Technology featuring Justin Timberlake, I’m hoping Kanye beats him soundly. Time will tell. Who are you rooting for?
