WED. | 09 20 06 | 8PM | NALIP NY PRESENTS NEW LATINO FILMMAKER SCREENING SERIES: 2006 SHORT ENDS SHOWCASE

Nalip NALIP NY, in association with Anthology Film Archives, cordially invites you to the 2006 SHORT ENDS SHOWCASE on Wednesday, September 20th, as part of its NewLatino Filmmaker screening series (now in its 6th year!). During this year’s venue we focus our attention on narrative short films created by six emerging "writer/directors" from the New York region.

These six dynamic films run the gamut of aesthetic styles and subject matter but all take an intriguing look at the frailties of the human condition, and take you on a cinematically diverse roller-coaster ride.

THE NEGATIVE During a photo hunt in a Mexican border town, a photographer’s life takes an unexpected turn when one of his snapshots causes a boy’s death. THE NEGATIVE is a psychological thriller based on the worldwide folklore that photographs strip away pieces of the soul. (Cruz Angeles, 2006, 15 min. USA. In Spanish with English subtitles)

VICTORIA PARA CHINO | VICTORIA PARA CHINO is a short narrative film based on the worst single case of illegal immigrant deaths in United States history. When the Highway Patrol discovered an abandoned trailer in Victoria, Texas, 17 were already dead, including a five year-old boy and his father. Two more later died in a hospital that evening. Immediately after the truck was discovered, law enforcement agents began tracking down those responsible. (Cary Fukunaga, 2005, 14 min., USA. In English and Spanish with English subtitles)

SEEKING SOLACE
Guy, is a regular man who finds himself in an unlikely circumstance, of his own creation. This film follows one of those moments that defines a person, when he makes a life choice but is glad no one he knows was there to witness it. (Derek Velez Partridge, USA, 2006, 10 min.)

SCAR TISSUE How far would you go to keep your child during a custody battle? A Mother makes a deal with a dangerous man to keep her husband from taking her child. Then changes her mind. But is it too late? (Angel David, USA, 2006, 13 min.)

MARIPOSA A young Chicana photographer crosses the Mexican border, gets kidnapped, and is prepared for her murder. (Elvira Carrizal-Dukes, USA, 2006, 14 min, In Spanish with English subtitles)

BETTY LA FLACA  Skinny Betty might just as well not exist given the lack of attention she gets from men, including her boyfriend Carlos. Her co-worker, Reina, recommends she have some work done to enlarge and enhance the most important part of the body–her butt. When Betty arrives at the homegrown ‘"clinica" in Maria Dolores living room in the Bronx, she has no idea how much impact a little ‘work’ will have on her life. Q&A with filmmakers in attendance after screening. Curated by Edwin Pagan. (Hugo Perez, USA, 2006, 8 min. In English and Spanish with English subtitles)
