1,500 STUDENTS PROTEST IMMIGRATION BILL IN ARLINGTON

Protesters March From Ballston To Courthouse

Protest_1 ARLINGTON, Va. — About 1,500 northern Virginia high school students participated in a protest to immigration reform Thursday, police said.

The eight-block march from Ballston Plaza to the Courthouse in Arlington was the third demonstration in Arlington County this week. Students from Arlington County were joined by students from Fairfax County.

“Isn’t the U.S. supposed to be free?” asked Elena Giamporcaro. “Isn’t the U.S. about freedom? I mean, why can’t we be here and have freedom, too?"

The students cheered as leaders outlined points of contention. House Bill 4437 calls for strict enforcement of immigration laws and enhancement of border security.

Most of the student protesters were Latino, and many of them are immigrants, children of immigrants or grandchildren of immigrants with roots in El Salvador, Mexico, Bolivia and other countries. They say their story is the American story.
