WHERE THE PARTY NEVER STOPS

Parties around All-Star Weekend test heartiest of souls

SI.com’s Arash Markazi traveled to Houston over the weekend to chronicle the NBA’s other All-Star game, the slate of neverending parties surrounding the festivities. Here’s his diary of the scene.

Thursday, Feb. 16, 9:30 p.m.

The invitation for this exclusive party at Next, a club a couple blocks away from the Toyota Center, read 7:00 p.m., yet it’s almost 10 and the guest of honor, Kobe Bryant, is nowhere to be found. He’s running a little late after arriving in Houston just a few moments ago, but most of the sneaker-heads in attendance could care less.

With dozens of Nike Zoom Kobe 1 shoes littered through the club in nearly every size and color imaginable, most of the partygoers are unfazed by KB8’s absence as they head to the open bar before making their way over to a lounge in the opposite corner of the club that has been remade into the Nike ID Design Studio, the famous by-appointment-only store in New York where sneaker-heads have been creating their own kicks from scratch for the past year. On this night, every longneck-holding trendsetter is salivating as they are given the opportunity to create their very own Zoom Kobe 1s, customizing everything from the color of the swoosh to the name and number printed on the back of the shoe.
