DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR 2ND ANNUAL NYC SMALL BUSINESS AWARDS

Contest Will Award $160,000 in Grants to Small Businesses; Applications due by March 10, 2006

Small_biz The Second Annual NYC Small Business Awards competition, which will distribute $160,000 worth of cash grants to small businesses throughout the five boroughs, is accepting applications through March 10, 2006.  The contest, a joint initiative of the New York City Commission on Women’s Issues (CWI) and NYC Business Solutions, celebrates the achievements of women and business in New York City.  Businesses eligible to apply for the contest must be based in New York City, have fewer than 100 employees, have annual revenues under $2 million and have been established a minimum of two years. Entries to the awards program will be judged on demonstrated success for women in New York City, as well as business success and entrepreneurial leadership.

The awards will be given to selected businesses that are eligible for one of three tracks: Track 1 applicants—those with gross annual revenues for the most recent tax year of less than $250,000—will compete for one of two first place $10,000 awards.  Track 2 applicants– those with gross annual revenues for the most recent tax year of less than $750,000—will compete for one of two first place $20,000 awards. Track 3 applicants—those with gross annual revenues for the most recent tax year of less than $2 million—will compete for one of two first place $50,000 awards.

Small business owners can download an application and read the official rules at www.nyc.gov/women, by calling 311, or by visiting one of the City’s NYC Business Solutions Centers, where information sessions will be held to provide more information about the program.  Applications will be accepted through March 10, 2006.

Entries will be judged against other businesses of comparable size based on the benefits the enterprise provides to women in New York City.  Applicants will also be judged on business performance to date, potential for future success, and demonstrated entrepreneurial strength.  A panel of judges will select the winners from the award applicants, and the winners will be announced in the summer of 2006.
