Guatemalan_cultureThe Marimba: National Symbol of Guatemala. Baudilio Ordóñez, Guatemalan artist, musician, and folklorist, La Casa de Cultura de Guatemala en Nueva York. This festival, featuring a lecture/demonstration on the history and use of the Guatemalan marimba (xylophone) and a presentation of traditional Guatemalan costumes of different regional and ethnic groups, reveals how music and textiles may be used as symbols of regional identity. A final tableau recreates a Guatemalan village market illustrating the place and customs in which this music is enjoyed and the clothing worn.
